Leadership
The business team concept is the most powerful element to achieve success — yet many confuse having a group with having a true team. Don Corsaro outlines the 7 essential elements every real team must have.
The business team concept is the most powerful element in order to accomplish, succeed and excel to greater achievements. However, many people do not fully understand the true meaning of the word "team."
Some may confuse the term with an association — you work for a company and the manager may refer to his reports as a team. Simply labeling your group a team may be a misnomer. A more appropriate question: does your group function as a TEAM?
7 Basic Elements of a Team
Goals — Not just general statements like "Sell more." Goals must be both identified and achievable. Think of President Kennedy's 1962 Moon Landing vision: a clear, compelling goal that captured the imagination of America.
Planning — Too many managers have no understanding how this simple act gives the team more clarity. There must be a goal and a detailed plan to achieve it.
Training, Training, Training — Retired Chief Deputy Charles Corrao, twice decorated for bravery, explains: "I had the SWAT TEAM constantly training as it has to become part of their very nature. Some things you just can't plan for, and that's where their training comes in."
Tools — Any and all proper equipment needed to achieve an objective. The right tools are essential — from the factory worker's wrench to the salesperson's CRM.
Personal Talents — All talents are expandable. Top leaders know each member of the team must trust you and you them. Knowing each member's strengths gives the group a definite advantage.
Recognition & Reward — Rewards tied to recognition are a powerful tool for a leader. Be creative in your R&R, keeping in mind you're developing growth, trust, and loyalty with your people.
Communications — Must be crystal clear in all directions: up-down and laterally. Greater accuracy relates to improvement of profitability — a term every owner and executive should embrace.
The need for good leadership in business today is paramount. The right leadership for a team can make a positive and profitable impact and change the dynamics in an organization.
